BABA YAGA (Russia, Eastern Europe)
Baba Yaga is an old woman, or crone, who lives in a small magical house. Sometimes the house is described as having chicken legs. She is from Slavic folklore. She guards the fountains of the waters of life and sometimes helps people, sometimes eats children. Just in case, it’s best to avoid her.
Since she is often seen as embodying female empowerment and independence, the trickster and/or evil side of this creature could be seen as misogyny.
In the anthology, Penelope McDonald illustrated her mother, Wendy McDonald’s poem.
Have you had any encounters with this hidden creature?
