BAKU (Japan)
The Baku was created from leftover parts after all the other animals were made by the gods.
They are holy beasts that protect us by eating evil spirits that can cause nightmares, illness, and bad luck.
Myths about Baku may be based on a real animal— a now-extinct species of the Asian tapir that once lived in China.
Baku remain popular. Some children in Japan sleep with Baku-shaped pillows!
Joannie Duris, the poet, who wrote our BAKU poem, grew up in Japan. Her poems BAKU and EARTHQUAKE! were inspired by the emotional connection she still feels to the creatures of her childhood.
Have you had any encounters with this hidden creature?
