IARA (Spotted in lakes and rivers in the Amazon region of South America)
As with most mermaids and sirens, Iara is described as a beautiful woman. She would use her beauty and mesmerizing voice to either lure men in the Amazon regions to their deaths or to spend the rest of their lives with her (depending on which myth you believe). As with most myths, Iara’s origins are complicated and surely argued over at coffee houses across Brazil and Columbia. She is often blamed for misfortune and the first one people point to when an explorer goes missing in the jungles of the Amazon.
