JACKALOPE: Tall Tale Critter

Back to Hidden Creatures Bios

JACKALOPE (South West and Western United States)

The Jackalope is a fearsome critter seldom seen in the North American Wild West. Cowboys riding the range tell tales of jackalopes singing along with them at campfires late at night. Leanne (who wrote HOPPALONG COTTONTAIL and her family swear they’ve seen flaggerdoots of 27 jackalopes hopping along while driving through Wyoming and Montana on their way to grandma’s house.

Portmanteau. Now there’s a fun word. It basically means to combine things (like words or sounds) and a Jackalope is a North American portmanteau of a jackrabbit and an antelope. While they have been spotted all over the world, in America folklorists see the jackalope as one of a group of tall tale animals, known as fearsome critters, (like the Agropelter) common to North American culture since the turn of the twentieth century. Some such stories lend themselves to comic hoaxing by entrepreneurs who seek attention for their own personal or their region’s fortune.*

Faker’s gonna fake. But that doesn’t mean they don’t exist!
