BASILISK BESTED
Gnome & UnGnome Facts About Jasmine:
Jasmine is a Navy wife
Living her best boy-mom life
Waiting for the girl she seeks
No more biotech filling her weeks
Now that she’s a homeschool mom
She’s constantly writing to find calm
And if she finds the extra time
She’ll sit by a fire and write in rhyme
Absol’s Q&A with Jasmine:
Hello Jasmine! You have one of my favorite aromatic names! Thanks for being our LEGEND of the WEEK!
Tell us what magical or legendary creature you’d be if you could, and why?
I’d be a Ziz, a giant griffin-like bird in Jewish mythology, so I could give my boys rides through the sky like Falkor and Bastian in the Neverending Story.
Interesting. So many of you wish to fly. Gnomes do not like to fly. My cousin tried climbing a tree once. Once.
Can you tell us a little about how you came to be a part of Gnomes & UnGnomes?
I heard about the Writers’ Loft and their anthologies through the lovely Nancy Tupper Ling.
Tell me how you came to write about the Basilisk?
I chose a basilisk because when I researched cryptozoology I saw this terrifying creature could be defeated by a rooster’s crow and that was just too hilarious of an idea not to play with and make into a poem.
What’s something great in your life you’d like to share?
I’m going to be published in this fabulous anthology by the Writers’ Loft MA. Have you heard of it?!
Also, after having three adorable and rambunctious boys, I am pregnant (at the time of writing), with a little girl. (Cue momma squeals of delight.)
Wow! Congratulations!! I hope all your kids are named after plants. Though everyone names kids after plants, maybe your little girl could be named after a mushroom? Amanita or Rhodotus are lovely names! 😉
What’s your all-time read-or-die favorite book?
You can’t ask a writer for just one favorite. So I’ll share a few of my all-time favorite picture books…
The Rough Patch by Brian Lies, because when I first read that book I was struck with the realization that picture books could be meaningful and still engaging for a child and started to seriously think about writing something impactful like Brian’s book!
The Tale of Three Trees by Angela Elwell Hunt I stumbled upon without knowing the plot or twist ending., but it caught me with allegory fever!
The Elephant and Piggie by Mo Willems books showed me how kids’ books with simple words, but engaging characters, could be memorable and giggle-inducing for children and adults alike.
Agreed! Thanks for your time, Jasmine!
