JINSHIN-MUSHI (Japan)
These fist-sized insects from Japanese folklore have branch-like parts sprouting from their ends that can generate sound waves to keep predators away.
It is said that Jinshin-mushi live in underground hives in groups of three to five mated pairs with their offspring. Adults protect the little ones until they are old enough to leave the hive.
When the beetles swarm it is believed that the vibrations from the sound waves can cause small earthquakes, landslides, and avalanches.
Joannie Duris, the poet, who wrote our EARTHQUAKE poem, grew up in Japan. Her poems were inspired by the emotional connection she still feels to the creatures of her childhood.
Have you had any encounters with this hidden creature?
