JINSHIN-NAMAZU (Japan)
According to the myth, this giant catfish is trapped under Japan by a stone and is guarded by the god Takemikazuchi. When the god lets his guard down, “Namzu thrashes about, causing violent earthquakes.”
Japanese scientists have discovered that catfish become agitated several hours before an earthquake occurs. Catfish predict earthquakes with 80% accuracy!
The Japan Meteorological Agency uses pictures of the catfish on earthquake warning signs. Check out this video.
Together with Jinshin-Mushi, we’re the movers & shakers of Japan!
Joannie Duris, the poet, who wrote our EARTHQUAKE poem, grew up in Japan. Her poems were inspired by the emotional connection she still feels to the creatures of her childhood.
Have you had any encounters with this hidden creature?
