MEDUSA: Gorgon (Greece)

In the anthology, you’ll notice that the artists interpreted Medusa in many ways. Traditionally, according to Greek mythology, Medusa was a human female with living venomous snakes in place of hair; those who gazed into her eyes would turn to stone.

According to Greek mythology, Medusa was a beautiful young woman until a series of bad things happened to her. She was hurt by Poseidon (god of the sea), changed into a Gorgon by Athena (goddess of war), and then killed by Perseus (son of Zeus).

Christine Van Zandt wrote her poem, “Reflecting on Medusa” to remind people that Medusa wasn’t always monstrous and shouldn’t be judged by her appearance.

Did you know?
When Medusa was killed by Perseus, Pegasus, the winged horse flew out of her body!
