MERFOLK (Originally Syria, but now global)

Merfolk are sparkly half human and half fish. Modern merfolk can be merboys, mergirls, mermaids or mermen. Originally, they were considered female.

According to Royal Museums Greenwich, “A mermaid is a mythical sea-dwelling creature, often described as having the head and body of a woman and a fish’s tail below the waist.

Stories of mermaids have existed for thousands of years and span cultures across the world – from coastal settlements in Ireland to the landlocked Karoo desert in South Africa. The English word mermaid is a compound of “mere” (Old English for sea) and “maid” (a girl or young woman).”

Merfolk love sunbathing on ocean coasts and diving through waves. Their magical super power is singing. When a mer sings– everyone within earshot is mesmerized!

Our anthology has many different kinds of mermaids or water nymphs that have their own info pages: Undines, Asrai, Ruskala, Iara, Sirens, Yemaya, and others swimming around.

One of the earliest mermaid legends appeared in Syria around 1000 BC when the goddess Atargatis dove into a lake to take the form of a fish.
