Wallace West (Poet/Author/Illustrator)

Wallace wrote & illustrated the poem
WHO? WHAT? WEREWOLF

Gnome & UnGnome Facts About Wallace:

I am a Houston native and world explorer spending most of my time on the US East Coast (the rest of my time wherever strikes my fancy).

I once foolishly pet a wild alligator and consider a tinned-fish picnic in Norway the best meal I’ve ever had.

By day I’m an artist and writer. By night my beagle and I keep an eye out for supernatural creatures and giant serpents.

He may or may not start a travel blog called, WHO? WHAT? WHERE WALLACE?

Absol’s Q&A with Wallace:

Good day to you, Wallace. Let’s start with our icebreaker. If you could be any magical or legendary creature what would you choose?
A were-leopard. I love a shapeshifter, and sleek leopards make more friends than gigantic wolves. It’s a scientific fact. Believe it or else.

I noticed you wrote and illustrated a poem about…shudder…werewolves. Whyever would you choose this dark and twisty creature to star in a poem for kids?
If I had to pick one movie genre to watch for the rest of my life, it would be horror (with a deep vein of comedy and a soupcon of romance). And when I’m looking for a creature feature, I ALWAYS start typing “werewolf” into the search bar. So, writing about this critter was an easy decision.

So, you’re illustrating other poems besides the one you wrote, how did you choose them? What inspired you? Inquiring gnomes want to know.
I love a serpent, reptile, or giant ocean beast. There’s so much fun to have with squirmy shapes and scaly texture. Plus, drawing creatures is so much more fun than boring old humans.

What’s great in your life right now that you want to share, personal or professional?
Staying true to my art mantra: if you’re not having fun doing it, you’re not being you.

How did you come to be part of this anthology? A convincing chupacabra told me I better participate or she’d make me wish I had.

Oh yes, I think I know of whom you speak, I won’t say their name but it rhymes with Wristen Bixted.

Thanks for taking the time to chat with me! One last question. If you could have the company of any artist’s ghost, who would it be?
Mary Blair. She died the year I was born, but not before creating volumes of magical work. Look her up! As a kid, I called myself Mary (even before I knew who she was!) and one of my favorite rides at Disney (A Small World) was one of her many designs for the Magic Kingdom.

Well, I’d love to see what the two of you come up with should this meeting ever happen.
