WOLPERTINGER (Germany)

To catch sight of the shy Wolpertinger, hike deep into the alpine forests of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg in Southern Germany. Bring your imagination, patience, and a checklist. Antlers? Fangs? Wings? Rabbit head? Small mammal body?

Be quick with your camera as this shy, agile creature will bound away on its hare legs, swim swiftly with its duck-feet, or perhaps even take flight! What a sight (if you can get it).

Nicole Reineke, the poet who wrote our Wilpertinger poem grew up with tales of a Wilpertinger, although it’s more commonly referred to as Wolpertinger, with an O.
